Steps to Becoming an Independent Agent

To become an independent Medicare agent, follow these steps:

  1. Get Your Health Insurance License: First, obtain a health insurance license in your resident state. This license is essential for selling Medicare plans.

  2. Complete AHIP Certification: The America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) certification is necessary for selling Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans. It provides essential training on Medicare plans and regulations.

  3. Get Errors & Omissions Insurance (E&O Insurance): Protect yourself by obtaining Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance. It covers any unintentional mistakes or omissions in your work.

  4. Contract with a Medicare Wholesaler (FMO): Partner with a Field Marketing Organization (FMO) that specializes in Medicare. They can provide support, access to carriers, and help you navigate the industry.

  5. Getting Contracted and Appointed with Multiple Medicare Companies: Work with various Medicare insurance companies. Being appointed allows you to sell their plans.

  6. Complete Your Annual Carrier Medicare Certifications: Each year, complete certifications required by the carriers you represent. These ensure you stay up-to-date on plan details and regulations.

  7. Buy Leads and Start Selling: Invest in lead generation to find potential clients. You can purchase leads or use other methods like networking and referrals.

  8. Retain Your Medicare Customers: Building strong relationships with your clients is crucial. Provide excellent service, stay informed about plan changes, and offer ongoing support.
